NEWSLETTER 2016
Greetings!
Wow, what a year!
We all have a new President and we’re all waiting to see how that turns out!
This year, I attended the High Holy Days at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills.  The Synagogue is beautiful and the service was led by Rabbi Aaron and the new, female Cantor Lizzie Weiss. I was extremely pleased to be accompanied by prominent Los Angeles Attorney Stephen Shikes, who has agreed to be the legal advisor for The Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust.
Eric Reiter, Executive Director of Temple Emanuel and also Trustee for the Zuckerman Memorial Trust revealed that my donation to the Temple this year was used to purchase a Sukkah for the Sukkot holiday at the entrance to the Sanctuary.  What a rewarding surprise!
Since 2009, The Albert & Malca Pasternak Mitzvah Grant has been awarded to an outstanding Bar/Bat Mitzvah student at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills.  This year, Bat Mitzvah student Summer Quinn is the recipient of the award and the Temple’s Religious School receives a matching gift.  We wish Summer continued success!
This year, I was fortunate to continue performing with the “It’s a B.L.A.S.S.T.” Theater Company.  The shows are written, produced and directed by Loriston Scott, a professional Hollywood Screen Writer and Senior Fitness Instructor for over twenty facilities throughout Southern California.  One of our engagements included the beautiful, new Veteran’s Administration Building in Westwood, California.
For his dedication to helping Seniors and bringing them live musical theater, Loriston Scott is the recipient of the Jane Zachary Endowment for the Arts award for 2016.  Kudos to Loriston!
And finally to end the year on a high note, The Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust held their second Annual dinner at Callender’s Grill in West Los Angeles located next to the Los Angeles Museum of Art.  In attendance were Jane Zachary, Secretary; Rene Smith, Administrator; Eric Reiter, Trustee; Dan Bemel, UBS Financial Advisor and Stephen Shikes, Esquire.  Bill Hranchak, the Trust’s Accountant had to be out of town but assured us he will do his best for the Trust’s success.
The Trust annual charitable contributions for 2016 include:
Ability First, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Disabled American VeteranS, Junior Blind of America, LA Mission, The Arthritis Foundation, Mazon
The Alumni & Friends of Fiorella H. Laguardia School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
The Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust looks forward to future financial gains so that we may increase our various gifts & charitable donations.

Greetings! 2015 was an exciting year for The Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust.
In March, I was delighted to portray Hillary Clinton in “I Luv Oz”, an original musical comedy.  The show received rave reviews and subsequent roles included Mrs. Thurston Howell III in Gilligan’s “Musical Treasure” Island and George Bailey’s mother in “It’s a Wonderful Musical Life”. The shows were written, produced and directed by Loriston Scott, a professional Hollywood Screen Writer and founder of the production company “It’s a B.L.A.S.S.T.”.
Mr. Scott is also a Senior Fitness Instructor for over twenty Senior Citizen Facilities throughout Southern California.  For his dedication to helping Seniors and bringing them live musical theater, he is the recipient of The Jane Zachary Endowment for the Arts award for 2015.
In August, Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills held a Sing-A-Long to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the movie “The Sound of Music”.  Since I had appeared as Liesl, the “Sixteen going on Seventeen” Ingénue in the theater production starring Florence Henderson, I was invited as a special guest.  It really was a magical moment for me as I truly felt like a celebrity. Many thanks to Eric Reiter, my Trustee and Executive Director at the Temple and Rabbi Aaron for making it all happen.
In 2015, the Albert & Malca Pasternak Mitzvah Grant was awarded to Abbey Segal an outstanding Bat Mitzvah student at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills and the Synagogue received a matching gift. We congratulate Abbey and wish her continued success.

Congratulations to All!
In 2014, I was honored to be on the planning committee of the Aishet Chayil 29th Annual Scholarship Dinner and Silent Auction at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills. For the silent auction, I donated a vintage pearl and diamond necklace that belonged to the late Malca Pasternak, wife of Albert, one of the earliest Vice Presidents of Temple Emanuel.  Allan Fink, grandson of Malca and Albert and my long-time companion gave this necklace to me before he passed away in 2013.
This year’s Aishet Chayil event was the most financially successful one to date!  My guests included Rene Smith (Trust Administrator), Susan Davies, Nicole Feemster and Kevin Phillips.

Tragedy struck the Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust, The Albert & Malca Pasternak Mitzvah Grant and the Jane Zachary Endowment for the Arts.
Allan M. Fink, the grandson of the late Albert and Malca Pasternak passed away on January 4, 2013 at age fifty-four.
Allan was the beloved companion for thirty-one years of Jane Zachary, daughter of the late Sol and Evelyn Zuckerman.  Allan was truly a creative visionary.  He will be deeply missed.
In 2013, three pieces of historical and valuable artwork were given to Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills by the Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust.  They include the following:
(A)  A Jewish Colonial Trust Stock Certificate from 1901 belonging to Malca Pasternak’s father.  This historical document was restored by Aicheson & Watters at a cost of seven hundred dollars.  The handmade frame is twelve carat white gold with UV protection Plexiglas in front and back and was framed by Beverly Hills Picture Framing at a cost of one thousand dollars.
(B)  An antique, needlework sampler was made by Evelyn Zuckerman’s mother, Gertrude Adler Back, approximately one hundred and thirty years ago.  The picture has UV protection Plexiglas in front and back and was beautifully framed by Beverly Hills Picture Framing for five hundred dollars.
(C)  The ceramic plaque was awarded to Albert Pasternak in 1950 for service to the United Jewish Appeal. Albert Pasternak was Vice President of the very first Congregation at Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills.
A custom-made plaque commemorating the Sol & Evelyn Zuckerman Memorial Trust, The Jane Zachary Endowment for the Arts and The Albert & Malca Pasternak Mitzvah Grant was placed on the Temple wall above the artwork.  The pictures are displayed in the hallway at the entrance to the school children’s classroom.

In June, Rene Smith performed with her choral group (The Athena’s) at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.  I really enjoyed it.  Their rendition of “The Shadow of Your Smile” was fabulous and the fare and atmosphere at The Los Angeles Athletic Club were elegant.
Last year we neglected to remember the DAV. Evelyn Zuckerman was a staunch supporter of the DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS.  They were very kind and in 2010, awarded Evelyn the Commanders Club Certificate and a gold coin for her contributions (see Sol and Evelyn Zuckerman Archives).  We are excited to add them this year to our charitable contributions list.
Evelyn also had a strong interest in the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS for many years so this year we’ve included them.
Rene Smith suggested adding the ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION, a national group serving the needs of those afflicted with Arthritis.
I have decided to continue with my previous year selections, the JUNIOR BLIND OF AMERICA, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of those who are blind, visually impaired or multi-disabled, ABILITYFIRST, a program serving over 2,000 children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities in Southern California and the LOS ANGELES MISSION who has been helping the homeless and disadvantaged of Los Angeles since 1936.
